The DC Technology Network

People from Washington DC who are passionate about the Web and technology

We all need to get out of our home offices and start doing our work in public together. Trust me. It's way more fun.

What is your favorite geek hangouts in DC? Where do you go to work on your side projects?

I go to Murky Coffee in Arlington or Ebenezer's Coffee House on Capitol Hill.

This is the best suggestion yet! Now that I work for myself I realize the thing I miss most about working for the man was my co-workers -- going to lunch, ranting/raving on coffee breaks and talking shop across the cubes.

nclud's studio is nearing completion and all (well no more than 10 or so) are welcome to come and hang-out during the day. I think it would be awesome to have a community type collaborative environment thing going on. Contact us via nclud.com if you are every interesting in hanging out.

What part of the city are the offices located in? For those of us who wouldn't be able to make it during the day, would you be up for doing things there after work hours?

We are at 10th and M Street NW -- right across the street from the Convention Center, a half block from Yellow/Green Line. And YES! Alex and I are always up for opening things up to the community in anyway. We are hoping to have an open house once Alex gets back from his European Vacation.

I find myself fairly regularly camping at Tryst (http://www.trystdc.com/) in Adams Morgan. Couches, power, WiFi, iced green tea, and a staff that's been conditioned both by management and lifelong patterns of apathy to generally leave you alone. The food's reasonable, and you can almost always convince a neighbor to watch your gear while you run down the street to eat a felafel from Amsterdam Falafelshop (http://www.falafelshop.com/)

On nice days, they slide open the glass doors lining 18th St. and open the space to the world. And since the DC smoking ban took effect, you can go straight from Tryst to a client meeting without smelling like you're at the tail end of a bender.

I go to two differnt places to do my work away from the house. Murky Coffee in Arlington and St. Elmo's Coffee Pub in Del Ray.

My favorite place to eat in Adams Morgan is Amsterdam Falafelshop (http://www.falafelshop.com/)., which is owned by friends of mine. Even if they did not own the place I still would go there.

I am lucky in that there is a coffee shop (Daily Grind) very close to my apartment. I usually go there in the evenings, but like most Big-Corp coffee spots, it closes at 7:00pm which is irritating.

I like going to Murky in Arlington on the weekends, but they are always full of students and it is a bother to find quality seating; they have good coffee though.

The Arlington Central Library is a nice and quiet place to write code, especially on Wednesdays since it closes at 9:00pm on that day.

I am not sure I would call them geeky, but there is a nice Starbucks in Glover Park on 2302 Wisconsin Ave. I also like the Brickskeller near DuPont Circle (1523 22nd St NW).

I think there is (was?) a Murky in Eastern Market close to the Eastern Market metro station.

I sometimes hang out at Soho Coffee at 22nd and P NW (Dupont). Only problem is that once too many people get on their wireless at once it starts going all crazy like.

As usual, you're dead on Justin.

What we could really use is a Coworking environment somewhere in DC. On that note, I created a facebook group a little while back for those interested in Coworking: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7618672124

Join up if you're into it, so that when we find a venue we can begin working together more easily.

More info on the Coworking movement is here: http://blog.coworking.info/
