Chuck, when are the muttonheads in DC going to wake up an allow telework in their organizations? Has there been progress since the "Blizzard of '96?" when the Internet was emerging as a business tool? It doesn't seem so...

Sure.
I am President, CEO, and a co-founder of the Telework Coalition (www.telcoa.org). We are a non-profit association headquartered in Washington, DC.
What we do is best summed up by our tag line "enabling and supporting virtual, mobile, and distributed work through research, education, technology and legislation." What that all means is that we acquire and disseminate lots of information about the "whys" and "hows" of the various permutations of this thing we call telework or telecommuting.
We have worked with both public and private organizations to help them see the many benefits of telework and then establish and implement successful programs.
We work with technology providers and help them both determine the needs of their prospects and evaluate their products.
We are working with groups that include older, rural and disabled (including vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan) people who are looking for at home jobs and the organizations that have or are creating positions for them.
The most recent concerns we have addressed include commuting with the high cost of gasoline, the environment, global warming and the burning of fossil fuels, and business continuity and continuity of operations (COOP) planning in the event of emergencies - a pandemic, falling bridges, acts of terrorism, weather related issues, earthquakes, severe traffic tie ups, etc.
I can go on and on. If anyone has any specific questions, please let me know.

Welcome Chuck! So you've done work in telework? I'd love to hear more. You should write a post about some of the work that you've done.
